The Wife of the President, Dame Patience Jonathan, has paid a condolence visit to the bereaved families of the eleven female politicians from Bayelsa State, who died in last Saturday’s motor accident.
The accident occurred near the Old Ahoada Market road, along the East-West road of Rivers State last Saturday on their way from a visit to the First Lady in her Okrika home.
The First Lady, who arrived early Monday in Yenagoa, was clad in a black attire and accompanied by prominent members of her Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Women for Change Initiatives, including the wife of the first Executive Governor of the State, Margaret Alamieyeseigha and former Bayelsa State Commissioner for Transport, Marie Ebikake.
Dame Patience, at the home of one of the deceased and wife of a staff of the Bayelsa Radio Corporation, Mrs. Ayakpo Otolo, condoled with the family, and with tears, prayed that God would grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.
She also visited the homes of a former member of the State House of Assembly from Brass Local Government and Special Adviser to Governor Seriake Dickson, Mrs. Ruby Benjamin; that of a former Commissioner for Women Affairs, in the Timipre Sylva administration, Hon. Gimbra Panowei; wife of the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Elizabeth Allison-Oguru and a woman leader from Otuoke Community in Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State, Madam Consider Amadi.
Also visited by the First Lady were the homes of a retired Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Pere Kalama and Mrs. Clara Abila.
Speaker of Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Konbowei Friday Benson, also described death as a heartache that no one can heal, adding that only God has the capacity to console the bereaved.
While condoling with the families, the Speaker noted that the incident was a state tragedy, adding that words seem inadequate to express the sorrow he felt by the loss of these distinguished Ijaw amazons.
